A Study of English Language Teachers’ Use of English in Upper Secondary School English Language Classes for Designing In-Service Teacher Training Programs to Foster Their Abilities to Use Classroom English
The New Course of Study for Upper Secondary School(MEXT,2009)states “When taking into consideration the characteristics of each English subject, classes, in principle, should be conducted in English in order to enhance the opportunities for students to be exposed to English, transforming classes into real communication scenes”. Taking such background into consideration, the author has conducted a series of research on teachers’ use of classroom English to design a program to foster teachers’ ability to use classroom English. This article is part of the research, and its purpose is to report the results of analysis of a survey carried out to grasp upper secondary school English language teachers’ needs, abilities and realities of their use of classroom English in English classes. As a result of this survey, discrepancies were found out among their needs, abilities and realities. This leads to some crucial suggestions for designing inservice teacher training programs to support teachers to use classroom English.
