In the learning unit of "Birth of Animals" at the fifth grade of elementary school, pupils learn about the growth of fish eggs. A common activity is breeding killifish (Japanese medaka) and observing its eggs with a microscope. However, the observation is often inadequate for pupils because not only many teachers are poor at teaching about breeding killifish and the observation of its eggs but also many children are inexperienced in microscopic observation. Based on these problems, using a small macro lens attached to a camera of a smartphone or tablet PC, we developed an easier method to observe and record the growth of killifish eggs compared to conventional methods. By using this device and method, it was revealed that even lower elementary school children can observe and record the growth process of killifish eggs easily and clearly themselves. In the future, this method is expected to be used effectively in actual science classes.
