In Japan, the number of teachers taking sick leave has been increasing, whereas the number of applicants for teaching positions has been declining. Because schoolteachers play a pivotal role in both educating and guiding students, it is essential to foster motivation and teaching competencies among current teachers and to recruit students who already possess these attributes. Such teachers are indispensable for maintaining and enhancing the quality of school education. There are various reasons for the increase in teachers taking sick leave and the decline in entry into the teaching profession. While deteriorating working conditions, such as long working hours, are common factors, the growing prevalence of students’ psychological and behavioral problems, including bullying and school refusal, also represents a crucial factor. As a result of these deteriorating working conditions, teachers’ self-esteem and self-efficacy in the teaching profession tend to decline. These psychological resources are essential, as self-esteem and self-efficacy in the teaching profession motivate teachers to provide higher-quality education and student guidance. Therefore, it is an urgent task to enhance self-esteem and self-efficacy in the teaching profession. However, for active teachers under severe stress caused by deteriorating working conditions, achieving this goal is difficult. Thus, it is important to cultivate these qualities in university students who aspire to become teachers. With this in mind, we initiated a new longitudinal study to examine the relationships among teaching aspirations, self-esteem and self-efficacy in the teaching profession, and general self-esteem, aiming to generate foundational insights for future interventions. The present study describes the research background, objectives, design, and measurement methods, and outlines the planned data analyses, thereby providing a clear direction for future research. To our knowledge, such a longitudinal study has not previously been conducted. The findings from this research are expected to contribute to improving school education by informing the development of effective interventions targeting self-esteem and self-efficacy. |
