| 内容記述 | This study aimed to explore effective lifelong learning support for children and youth with severe disabilities, including those requiring medical care, by analyzing open-ended responses from families participating in a “Lifelong Learning Project.” In Japan, since the ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, policies to promote lifelong learning for people with disabilities have been expanding ; however, empirical studies focusing on individuals with severe disabilities—especially during the school years—remain scarce. From 2023 to 2025, a two-phase questionnaire survey was conducted with 77 families involved in the project. Overall satisfaction with the activities was high across both phases. A total of 1,936 free-text statements were analyzed using text mining and co-occurrence network methods to visualize the meaning of participation. Three key themes emerged: (1) the sense of achievement and growth expressed through “I can/I did it,” (2) joy and empowerment experienced by both children and families through new activities and social encounters, and (3) discovery of previously unseen abilities and new possibilities beyond the home environment. Discussion linked these findings with national and international research and policy trends, emphasizing the need to continuously ensure learning opportunities starting in the school years, rather than restricting lifelong learning to post-graduation contexts. Children’s success experiences and peer interactions appear to strengthen family empowerment and self-efficacy, highlighting how diverse learning opportunities outside home and school can reinforce the family system. Furthermore, while Japanese governmental initiatives have promoted sustainable lifelong learning support through regional consortia, this study suggests expanding such frameworks to include children from an earlier developmental stage. This research provides an initial, data-driven understanding of the learning needs and experiences of children and youth with severe disabilities and their families, offering practical implications for designing inclusive and community-based lifelong learning systems. | |||||||||||
