| 内容記述 | This paper examines the functions of subordinate clauses in nara complex sentences and considers their defining characteristics. The analysis yields the following findings. Nara subordinate clauses express both factual and hypothetical conditions, often with a continuous aspect. This dual nature is closely tied to how speakers articulate them in discourse. These results highlight the need for a deeper analysis of nara complex sentences within conversational contexts. Moreover, the subordinate clause can express not only “what the other party has uttered” or “the action or situation in the scene of conversation,” but also utterances or situations that precede the nara complex sentence itself. The ability of the subordinate clause to convey prior utterances and situations (factual matters) stems from the fact that nara clauses exist in both surunara and shitanara forms, thereby enabling speakers to represent a wider range of temporal relations. | |||||||||||
