For these purposes, a questionnaire was conducted on 91 pre-service mathematics teachers (undergraduate students). 6 examinees from that survey were then selected for interview survey. The results indicated two main points: (a) Japanese pre-service mathematics teachers would not realize the necessity of advanced mathematics to educate elementary pupils on arithmetic.
