Richter and K. H. Ehrenforth are German music educational theorists. The \"didactic interpretation of music\" theory, which facilitates a proper understanding (Verstehen) of musical works, was first proposed by Ehrenforth, and then developed by Richter using his own original ideas. This study sought to clarify Richter's \"didactic interpretation of music\" theory and how it differs from Ehrenforth’s. Both Richter and Ehrenforth state that the structure to understanding a musical work is a dialogic circle between the musical work and the person playing or listening to it, and that such an understanding contributes to self−understanding and an extensive world understanding. The underlying theory behind these ideas stems from philosophical hermeneutics. However, they differ in terms of methodology : whether they focus on the musical work or the human being. Richter's theory focuses more on the form and style of the musical work, proposing the concepts of “embodiment”（Verkörperung）as physical understanding and “general principles of form”（allgemeine Gestaltungsprinzipien） that includes not only the musical form but also every form of life. In contrast, Ehrenforth’s theory focuses more on the process of developing children’s experiences and values : self−formation.
