| 内容記述 | By emphasizing the musical activities of saxophonist Rudy Wiedoeft(1893-1940), this study explores aspects of social dance music and the acceptance of the saxophone in early 1920s America. During this period, dance halls flourished in urban areas, with the simultaneous progression of social dance culture’s increasing popularity and the recording industry’s rapid development. The saxophone’s popularity also spread rapidly, with Wiedoeft becoming a symbolic figure of its popularity. Known for his extraordinary performance techniques and special effects, he has been described mainly as a solo performer who contributed to the public’s acceptance of the saxophone. However, few studies have examined his role as a member of bands performing social dance music. Based on The American Dance Band Discography 1917-1942 by Brian Rust(1975), I extracted and organized the recordings in which Wiedoeft participated and compiled a new discography focused on social dance music. By using this discography, I analyzed Wiedoeft’s recording trends, the transitions of the bands he participated in, and the networks among his fellow musicians. Findings show that 225 recordings including Wiedoeft were identified between 1918 and 1925. His recording activities peaked in 1920, with 1923 marking a temporary hiatus caused by his shift to live performances. Moreover, his recording career developed from playing with small outfits with diverse instrumentation to medium-sized and eventually large-scale bands. This transition reflects a broader trend in which dance bands evolved from small groups to larger ensembles, suggesting a correlation of Wiedoeft’s activities to the expansion and popularization of social dance music. Further, many musicians held overlapping memberships across multiple bands, which showed that the growth of dance bands was supported by an expanding musician network. Although this study focused on quantitative analysis, future research will examine the interrelations between dance music, the recording industry, and the acceptance of the saxophone from a qualitative perspective, thereby exploring how dance music influenced Wiedoeft’s musical style and shaped the public image of the saxophone. | |||||||||||
